Stalling GTI
« on: 27 September 2003, 11:37 »
Hi all

Got a problem with my 90 8v, I've recently been suffering with ISV syndrome. I cleaned the ISV valve with
carb cleaner & it now idles perfectly but since I've done that it stalls when cold, afer 5 mins or so when it's
warmed up a bit it's fine. It's caused some very interesting moments at roundabouts & junctions. Any ideas? As the
missus is pregnant & fed up with me driving a thirteen year old car when all me mates have new cars with such luxuries
as soundproofing & stereo controls on the steering wheel. It's become increasingly difficult to argue the case when it stalls
on me & scares the living sh*te out of the poor cow !!!!

I need urgent action or I'll be forced to buy an Astra club. AAAAAAAAAhhhhhhhhhh

Thanks for listening

Fast Eddie

Richandhazel and GolfVR6 will wade in shortly with their ideas.

But my favourite is the Idle Stabilisation Control Unit, which can be found in the cabin somewhere (you'll need Haynes or Rich to locate it).

The way to test it is very simple - when its cold - take it off - start the car - and see if it makes a difference. If not, get a new one.

Handy tip: buy a replacement off someone who has just written off their car - its 180quid new from VW - fiver to an owner whose currently in mourning.

Also, check Fuse 17. This fuse powers the ISCU.

Regards,
Tin

Not all GTI's have the ISV, cetainly not the early ones like mine. I'll have a look see if I find some info to help later.
Busy cleaning and prepping my latest acquisition for winter storage.

I don't think that there is a separate control unit for ISV on digifant cars as this is controlled by the ecu. Check the fuel mixture when warming up using gunston colortune from halfords, it is like a spark plug with a window. The colour of the ignition should be red/blue while warming up, turning to mainly blue with a tint of orange at operating temperature. I suspect it may be a coolant temp sender that is at fault as this should tell the ecu to enrich the mixture while warming up. Don't sell the car for an astra, no way!  :o

The only 'idea' that comes to my mind is to stop referring to your pregnant partner/girlfriend/wife as a 'poor cow' and show her some respect. Kind regards, yt.
