Mk5 Gti rumbling noise. Help
« on: 01 March 2012, 10:52 »
Hi everyone..

Have a problem ,a rumbling noise that sound like it is coming from the rear starts around 20 mph and gets less as you go faster, tends to get louder if i turn right say around a roundabout. I thought it was a bearing so went to local mechanic who jacked four corners and said nothing wrong. Now i haven't got a parcel shelf in the car and i have uniroyal tyres on the back surely tyres couldn't make this noise ??? Any Help would be great doing my head in !!!

Does sound like the uneven 'sawtooth' tyre wear that many Golfs seem to suffer from. I had it on the rear tyres on my mk5 GT; started when the tyres (Bridgestones) had done about 16k miles and got progressively noisier over time.

If you do a search, you'll find other discussion threads on this and other forum websites where other owners have experienced this problem, which seems to be quite common.

I now remember reading about this on a long term MK6 GTD  Autoexpress had.
They also found that quite a few readers suffered it as others wrote in about it.
They also found quite a few of them the geometry was set incorrect from the factory. :undecided:

Im suffering what sounds like you are all talking about with only 8000 miles on the car with bridgestone tyres fitted. I will be checking the tyres at the weekend for the 50pence shape!
