fading paint question
« on: 28 February 2012, 12:32 »
The right rear door at the bottom has faded a bit, its like dead paint, so i chipped away at the dead paint a bit with my key and it started coming off and the original paint coming back through, but its gunna take ages with the key, any suggestions of a better way?

It sounds like what your doing it removing laquer.. would need to be sanded back and re-sprayed again.

Sand the laquer off don't take and colour off though. 600 then go up to 1200. You do not want any sanding lines in the paint because it will show. You can use paper to get rid of and small fine lines

You can get aluminium oxide, wet and dry pack. Starts at 40 and goes through to 1200. Maybe start at 120 wet and dry. Up to you really

i got a hold of some 250, 600, 800, 1200 grit wet and dry sanding paper, i have read you have to sand it down lightly with water, keep the panel wet, once you have the lacquer off, then re-lacquer. Sound ok to you mate?

Yeah.
I would go horizontal with the 250 then vertical with the 600, then back to horizontal and so on.
