8v motors
« on: 02 October 2003, 13:04 »
I have an A plate mk2 8v GTi tht is ticking along nicely (apart from the exhaust which is slowly commiting Hare Kari, any suggestions for a complete system?). I have just been given an E reg 5door 8v (knackered box) that I am going to pinch a few bits from. Is there any major difference in the block/head on the later car, if so does it merit a swap (i.e. better compression/bearings etc). Also I understand that the later 'box has an LSD, does my early model (if I recon the box I might slip it in the 83). I am quite happy with my 3dr and would like to keep it original (ish) but if these bits are superior i might swap.

p.s. will be getting rid of 5dr in the next couple of months if any one wants the bits I don't have, am in cambs area.

VW haven't put LSD in any of their standard gearboxs.

perhaps there was LSD in the tea of the mechanic who diagnosed the box. Its knackered anyway (sounds like layshaft/input shaft bearing is hanging out) but he reckoned gti boxes where harder to get 'cos he was on LSD/PCP/Rocks, etc, etc.

Is the gearing different in a GTi box, I am sure the jetta I used to have was a bit more leisurely on the Mway,

just off to put the kettle on.....
