2nd starter motor to stick/burn out.
« on: 22 February 2012, 20:20 »
Can anyone help with this?

Basically my 8v AGG has been struggling to start for a while, anyway after a long drive I went to start the car and nothing happened, I was sceptical about bump starting it as it has been taking so long to fire into life. Anyway, I had to bump start it and she fired up instantly which surprised me.

I diagnosed the culprit as a knackered starter motor and replaced it on Sunday evening with another 2nd hand item, the car started up and ran fine for say 50 yards to where I parked it.

I then left it until today and went on a longer journey (following starting the car fine).

I went to leave and the same problem occured, no start but clicking from solenoid. So bump started it fine. Starter motor no. 2 is dead.

What is the most likely cause? Worn flywheel teeth?

The engine has had the 5000rpm limit for an unknown reason as well. Could the two be related? could crap from the knackered starter/flywheel gears have upset the crank position sensor?

What should I do?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Adrian

Starter: Could be battery related so get a battery check on it, somewhere like Halfords does it for free with a proper battery tester. A Multimeter across the terminals won't tell you the full story - you said it was a second hand starter, it would be really unlucky that the item is faulty as well?

Worn flywheel teeth would make a grinding noise when the starter engages, if you are getting clicking then I'd check the battery first then bench test the old starter if you still have it.

5k Rpm: Get the car scanned for faults, then check the timing, if the timing is ok then the hall sender in the dizzy might be faulty.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for response, Il do the checks as you have said and hope to eliminate some of the guesses. It seems like the helical gear maybe hasnt let the starter gear return and hence burnt out the second starter. Its weird because upon inspection of the original motor I still have the helical gear seems fine
