Coolant Leak
« on: 01 February 2012, 13:23 »
Hi all,

I have a very random coolant leak, checked all the hoses etc and there doesnt appear to be anything that appears obvious to me.
Its intermittent too, some days no leak others (like today must be about 50ml worth on the floor)

any clues / ideas where to look.
It has  G12 or whatever it is so its Red and obvious when it leaks but there are no signs of it on the engine / gearbox or anything

Best bet would be to get the system pressure tested, that will soon show any leaks.

popped it in a garage and they reckon its the water pump, only had a new timing belt done, not too long ago.....

Water pump is a pain in the arse to do isnt it

I'll check that as it does seem to be under load

Pull the top hose off the expansion tank, unscrew the top of it where you fill up with coolent and hold it over the hole where the lid was... Get someone to start the car and rev it..When you hold the revs there should be a steady flow of water going back in to the tank from the top hose your holding. (about the same amount of water flowing through a straw). If this isnt happening your water pumps had it .
Mine leaked every so often and it turned out to be the little o seal on the bottom of the temp sensor.

Not yet no, I am going to try the suggestion above that gavgtiturbo suggested...
BUT I have ordered the plastic part that you said was cracked just incase (VW dont stock these anywhere in the UK apparently, so I have had to order it from them, should be here this week)
and I will look over weekend.

I just hope its not the water pump
