I would think that your problem is the cold start valve, this briefly enriches the mixture when starting, leaking injectors using cause a problem when restarting the engine when hot. Is the problem worse when starting in the morning? what does the engine start like when hot?

i've changed the plugs, leads dizzy cap, rotor arm and air filter to give myself something to work from. the car starts after about about thirty seconds of cranking with full throttle, hot or cold, and runs with an intermittent misfire below 1.5 - 2k revs then picks up above this. I've put a can of injector cleaner in the tank and replaced the seals on the injectors. once the cleaner has been run through (with my ?20 of 4 star) i'll take a gander at the injector sparay patterns and dribblyness.
question- how do i get the injectors to spray without running the engine?

Cranking the engine over on the starter with the ignition system disabled. Have you checked the fuel mixture and ignition timing?

yep, ignition timing bang on the mark!
can i not get the injectors to output without cranking the engine?
wont they spray if I lift the metering flap/arm whilst the ignition is on?

The best way is to put the injector in a big glass jar, disable the ignition system, and turn the engine on the starter.

 ;D ;D
bought the car last week, it took us about an hour to start.
got it home, still trouble starting.
changed the plugs, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm.
finding it easier to start but now got the knack!
changed the seals on the injectors and airfilter. Put some injector cleaner stuff in the tank. used about ?8 of ?20 of 4star put in at the same time. whilst out and about the wire from the hall sender to the ignition module broke. Had a look and found all three wires in a poor state, rectified at road side and now...
Now the car starts much better and uses less fuel!!
