G60 Camshaft Upgrade (technical)
« on: 24 September 2003, 13:18 »
My '91 MK2 GTI is a 16v. As y'all know, it has two camshafts, one controlling the inlet valves, and the other controlling the exhaust ones.

I have seen a standard MK2 G60 (8v) single camshaft for sale (very cheap), and was wondering if it would be worth me swapping my inlet camshaft for the new G60 one.

My theory:
a- It should fit, even at the camchain end to link it to the exhaust camshaft

b- I shouldn't need to adjust any timing because I will be using the same pulley, and only the valve opening height will be affected

c- My only concern is that because the exh camshaft is standard, it will hold back any power increases, due to the valves not opening further in proportion to the inlet cam, but there should still be even a small difference

d- Or, it simply wont work at all, because that G60 camshaft is designed for inlet AND exhaust valve timing on the same shaft. So for every pair of lobes on the G60 camshaft, each cam is different, and they both need to be precisely the same (for 16v head), and wont match the "inlet only" requirements needed for my engine.

e- I would need the 16v version of the G60, and replace both camshafts.

Can anyone with experiece comment on this?

Thanks for your time

H.

it wont work

G60 cams are just 8v gti cams with less overlap

Ok, I knew I was chatting a load of bull! Did anything i said make any sense to anyone?

R u telling me that If I can find a 16v exh camshaft, I can use it to replace my inlet camshaft? Sounds good to me, but I dont know much about timing to to it all on my own.

How will it affect performance?

H.

I'm still not convinced, nobody in that forum had 100% tried and tested answers.

I think I'm better off getting a full and proper camshaft kit from Piper or Kent, then have the car rolling roaded.

Using the exhaust camshaft as an intake could bring me more troubles.

You can't use an 8v cam as it is designed to open inlet and exhaust valves at the right time. I would go and get a fast road cam kit , loads of cash!!  ;)
