8V downpipes
« on: 03 January 2012, 11:05 »
Does anyone make a decent downpipe for the 8v mk2?? Had a look under mine yesterday, and its got a full stainless scorpion system, but still has the stock 2 into 1 downpipe, which looks very restrictive where it merges into 1. Dont know if its a genuine part or a pattern part, but the pipes almost look squashed up into an oval where they join. Can you get a full 4 into 1 manifold and downpipe, or a decent large bore downpipe or is the stock one ok?? Cheers, Mat.

There are plenty of 4 branch manifolds available to fit the 8v. I think its worth getting a good brand from a reputable shop, as quality/fit can be an issue. The gap between the shell and steering rack is tight, I have had to play with engine mounts to stop an ashley manifold tapping on the rack.

The issue with the downpipe/manifold (aside from what's outlined above) is that your insurer will take it a lot more seriously than the rest of the exhaust system.  It has the potential to release a lot more power than a stainless replacement for the latter bits of the system, which just make a 'nicer' noise.

What brand of manifold/downpipe would you recommend then?? My car has a non PAS rack if that makes any difference with clearance.

Car is insured with all mods declared, including exhaust system so not too bothered by that side of it.
