HELP ME PLEASE !!!!

i have just entered the world of mk1 gti. i have a little problem. my engine is revving high, just 1100rpm to start with but after a while it goes up to about 1900-2000 rpm when idling, the idle screw is adjusted right in.
can anyone help. i sound like a tractor outside the house !!!

I got your message, forum tends to be quiter at the weekend.
Wecome to the forum and the world of Mk1 GTI's.  

You have a vaccuum leak somewhere. With the butterflies closed and the idle screw all the way in, no air should be able to pass into the inlet manifold. Check all your vaccuum lines. I'll also take a picture of something that happened to mine (which basically was a vaccuum leak) that caused exactly the same problem.........picture will be easier than trying to explain it.

Further to what I was saying before, I had a vacuum leak that took me ages to find. It was coming from a 'y' shaped piece of tubing running over the top of the rocker box cover. I just pushed it back in and my revs dropped down so far it stalled. Worth a look:-

Its worth while buying a reel of pipe and spending a sunday morning going round the engine bay replacing all those old woven style pipes that will have no doubt perished by now.
