Similar thing happened to me.Throttle cable came off on pedle side so i decided to chug home on tickover, turned up the revs on throttle body to give me more speed, got half a mile and a mate gave me a tow whilst being towed the fan didn't cut in cos of corroded wire on sender in rad,by the time i got home(2miles)the expansion temp sensor  blew out on expansion tank and I thought the same as you HG gone, engine cooked  but no it was ok got away with it car runs fine

when my rover HG went (very common fault , even on new cars as low as 10K) it blew chocolate milkshake all over the shop!. cost £475 to repair and i was lucky as the head didn't warp. thats why i now drive a golf

Glad you have the Golf now then.....I didn't realise Rover's were quite that bad.

I just feel totally gutted that a 10p blown fuse has caused all this and tarnished what was an amazing 16v.....I just hope she is ok.

My cautionery tale then would be to all owners to inspect their fan and housing regularly for any trapped debris or rust as the result of a snagged blade can be a blown fuse and then susbsequent overheating.....all very ugly!!

Watch this space....news tomorrow (hopefully good).

The main reason I was sure it was gone was that I can not get the interior heater to blow anything but cold air....always thought this was a pretty good indication the head gasket was gone.

Did the heaters ever blow hot air? The reason i ask is because this can also be caused by the heater bypass valves failing and might not be related to your over heating problem.

Yeah I've been trying to remember but I think they did blow semi-hot normally although never great performance.....but the thought that it might be something else cheers me up! :)  So thanks mate...will let you know how it goes!

Finally got car back from garage today and the news is GOOD!  As advised I had a compression test done first and this thankfully showed no problems with the head (phew!).

After that I opted to replace the fan and mounting/housing entirely as I didn't trust it any more.  Parts came to just over £100 but well worth it (original VAG).  This allowed the car to be run fully for prolonged periods and get the heat up.

Coolant was changed and topped and the car run at speed and low speeds for well over an hour and all was well with the old girl.  All in all I was very lucky to get away with not blowing the HG and I can only put this down to good fortune and spotting the early signs allowing me to stop before more damage done.

As in my original post I would advise all to routinely check their fuses and the actual condition of the fan and mounting.....it was corrosion on the bracket that caused the fan to jam, blow the fuse, and the car to then overheat.  Very hard to spot if you do a lot of fast motorway type driving where the engine is cooled 'naturally'.

I'm sure it seems like common sense and I don't want to preach to the converted....but it's an oversight I made and could have been costly.

Once again, thanks to all who took time to post with advice.....it is very much appreciated and makes me glad to be a VW owner and part of this great forum :)

Now that this car is sold I am sure I will have a lot more to post regarding my restoration 16v - the one I expected to cost me money!!!!

Take care all and happy dubbing ;-)
