Sas go for the 16 valver - The chart speaks for itself
Then at a later date you can change the bottom end for a 2 litre and get tons more fun! If i ever get mine back you can have a drive and im sure you will make your mind up then.

If dosh is a bit tight at the moment I would recomened doing the head gasket on the 2.0 8v ( Quicker job )and then saving up for either a good 2.0 16v Digi (ABF ) or save up a bit more and go for 1.8T AGU at a future date . Unless of course you're absolutely certain you want the 1.8 16V and that it is in good condition. and you don't mind mucking about with the fuel pumps, electrics etc off the donor car
