Tyre Noise
« on: 12 December 2011, 14:24 »
Hello there

Im new to the forum and this is my first golf so I have niggling question.

I have a 3 door GTi mk5 with 18" monza alloys that have good contisport contact 3 tyres all round, the problem is the amount of road noise that they make from the front especially on the motorway.
Is this normal for the car and size of wheel.

Ive looked on the mk6 forum and there is a post on there regarding tyre noise, car insulation etc, but everyone seems to have their own answer for it and not a remedy.
The tyres are fairy new so they are not yet ready for replacing, compared to my previous 3 series BMW that had michelin pilot sports on, its like driving a van!!

Is this normal and would changing to 17" alloys make this any better?

Thnaks

Not sure there is a 'fix' as such although I had a lot of road noise as well. The previous owner put Contisports on the front and Primewells on the rear.

I replaced all four with P Zero Nero tyres and noticed an immediate difference in road noise on all surfaces and at all speeds.

Are they at the correct tyre pressure?

I think there may be an element of it being a car characteristic depending on what you are used to but I can't comment on those tyres.

It is the trade off for better handling.

ive had 4 conti sport 2's on the car since it was new in sept 06, swapped front 2 for conti sport 3's in oct 10 and back 2 for conti sport 3's in aug 11.

I have 17 inch wheels, but I would say above 60/70mph there is road noise depending on the road, and its not always the tyres fault, but the cars insulation etc.

also changing to 17s wouldn't help that much as remember its only an extra 1/2 inch betwen you and the road, not a full inch!

...........got the same tyres on my ED30. There a lot better for road noise & comfort over the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta which i had before. The Contis came standard on a lot of GTI's so they can't be that bad.
