Radio Code for Gamma Stereo - need help
« on: 17 November 2011, 12:37 »
Hello all,
I have an 80s MK2 with the factory german stereo (it says "Gamma" on it) and I pulled the stereo out a few months ago. It worked fine then...well, it worked...  Anyway, today I put the stereo back in and it just says SAFE on the display and does nothing else.

I'm guessing this is some sort of VW anti-theft programming? Does anyone know where I can find the code to get it back into service? There is a sticker on the drivers side window that says "radio codiert" so I am assuming that it is anti-theft issues that I am dealing with, and not something else. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jode

Do a Google search for "Radio Codes". There are loads of places that will send you the security code online. Some are free, but most charge around £10. Due to the age of it, you may need to send/take it to somewhere to have it re-coded, but it should be doable.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I'm not suggesting you do this, but urban legends state over the years if you stick a gamma radio into the freezer it will reset itself. Weird non?

As above, pop it in the freezer along with your buckled bmx mag wheels and all will be good.

OK - Great!
I looked online, found a video that goes over some of the concepts for an American stereo and then figured out what all the German stuff in my paperwork means through a sort of reverse association with what the dude in the video said, and it is done!
The code was in a little pamphlet in the glove box and the buttons you have to push to get the "safe" to change to the code entry thing was also there. Entered the code and now back in business!

Thanks all.
