coolant light on

got up this morning to move the car and the coolant light came on

so i checked the coolant level which was over the max so i removed some and reduced it down to just below the max

the light is still coming on
i checked the book and it says to check the fan fuse which i did and it`s fine



the other issue is sometimes pulling away the car dies and i have to blip the throttle to pick the revs up and pull away it then goes okay
until i stop at lights or junction and it starts all over again



i have only owned the car for a day and i am already starting to regret buying it

on my test drive it was great no issues at all

any idea`s
any help would be great

car is a 2000 1.8 gti turbo

Does it do it as soon as you turn the ignition on? If so it might be the sensor in the coolant bottle mate, very common and a cheap and easy fix. When the engine is up to temp check there is flow back to the header tank via the small top pipe too.

Revs dying could be a number of things, main being throttle body needing cleaning and readapting

& Cleaning the prongs on in the coolant bottle with a toothbrush as said will probably sort the coolant light issue.

& Cleaning the prongs on in the coolant bottle with a toothbrush as said will probably sort the coolant light issue.

Or get a flat blade and give the prongs a little scratch to clean them off. This happened to me a week ago...no more light  :smiley:

Well all seams fine now

i removed a bit more coolant and the light went off

removed the airbox and cleaned the maf (although it looked spotless)

removed the throttle body and cleaned it (very dirty)

refitted after good clean

went for a drive and all seams well

so thanks for the help guys  :wink:


next job is to strip and clean  the starter as every now and then it makes a terrible noise  :rolleyes:

according to the last owner the timing belt had been changed but  closer inspection tells me otherwise   :angry:
