juddering when pulling away and accelerating????
« on: 27 April 2005, 23:25 »
First of all, hi there..... I own a 1998 Mk4 gti 1.8 20v non-turbo (41000miles).
.....as I pull away and reach 2-3k revs my car starts to judder and feels as if its going to conk out, but then it suddenly clears. sometimes it does it as i'm going down the motorway at speed. this problem was intermittent but its getting worse! I'm gonna break down soon, i just know it!

also when idling, at a junction or traffic lights etc. the revs can increase to about 1.5k but then drop back to normal. again this is intermittent but getting worse!

ive just had it serviced, (40kmiles), replacing plugs, ht leads, air filter and oil/filter. this did not make a difference.

please please please can anyone help????

could it be the MAF? (air mass meter)?

Could also be the coils which are renowned for failing on 1.8t, mine runs like a bag of sh*t in mornings after starting and was wondering if its coils, does anyone know if this is a recall or do you have to argue with the vw stealer?
MK4 2.0 GTI!, MK4 1.8T GTI, MK5 GT TDI 140, MK6 GTD.....loved em all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

probably maf.. they do them on exchange for about £75 at dealers.  no chance of the dodgy coilpacks on the non turbos, because they dont have coilpacks

:smiley:ok smarty pants not the coil, the ignition module...the part that the ht leads go to

....is there anything else it could be? or should i risk getting one and hope for the best? Ive seen brand new ones for sale for £75 rather than a recon one?

you could cure this problem, you could fit a new MAF and it could cure it, then again it might not, as youve changed the ignition module and that hasnt improved things i would think about counting that one out, temp senders are a problem on this model also which can cause incorrect fueling to the engine and also lead you to think the MAF could be at fault due to high mpg etc, i wouldnt like to say what i think it is......

id get some one with vagcom software on there laptop to plug in and see what fault codes your reading to help you in the right direction.... if not vw can do this but the price per hour is not good at all........ some independant vw places have the software, these could be your best bet....

Could be many causes to your problems....

.....Temp sender, thats a thought, although my mpg is not effected, still doing around 35mpg average.
is there anyway of testing these without going to a garage? what should happen if i disconnect or remove one of these?
