Custom icons are peasey easy. Desktop Visualizer is one such App that lets you create custom launchers with different icons, using paid for or free icon packs or images on your phone.
PS: If you have a decent ROM you can change the icons of the apps on your homescreen by long holding on them and choosing Edit, which gives you a load of options, one is to change the icon from icon packs, images on the phone etc etc
Oh right soz. The blue smiley face thing looks like a Handecent message icon but looks like the widget which you can't edit normally. Can do the icon with an app obvs.
