Hi, I'm a newbie with a problem on my Mk2 Gti 8v
« on: 11 September 2011, 18:55 »
Myself and friends have been restoring a Mk2 Golf Gti 8v K-jet 1986 C-reg over the past 6 months. I acquired it from someone in the Wisbeach area who made it look pretty but it wasn't so good as believed . The car has been fully stripped down, 2 new front floor pans, 2 inner sills, 2 outer sills, a rear back tailgate valance and a few other things. Basically it should have been in a scrap yard somewhere but I wanted a project and that's what I got!! All welding has now been done, underside of the car was undersealed with shiltz, brake pipes has been replaced, a restored engine subframe fitted, new wishbones, reconditioned drive shafts, the list is endless as to what I have done but I have at least 200 photo's on my fb account to document the work being done.

Finally I am nearly there to getting the golf in for an mot but in the last week we have had problems with snapping a bolt off the head to which we where attaching a stainless steel 4 branch manifold so we swapped the head for another I had which turned out to have a fast road cam in!! Lucky me, bargain head I brought for £30!!! The head is now on but for some reason there is no fuel getting to the injectors so she won't run!! Fuel pump is fine, You can hear it, we've changed the fuel lift pump for a spare I had, that isn't the fault and tomorrow were changing the starter motor as it doesn't seem to turn over well at all! I put this down to the battery but a new one has been fitted and it's still doing it!   Checked wiring, cold start module has been changed so the money is now on the starter motor as it's 'lazy' like my mate who's a mechanic said. There is a Vacuum that is needed to lift the fuel from the fuel tank I believe and the starter motor isn't producing enough power to help create this vacuum. It's not the fuel metering unit as that has been changed and fuel is getting to the metering unit just not the injectors, theirs also a spark at the spark plugs. Also changed the injectors.

If anyone can give any advise at all I'd appreciate it.

Many Thanks Chris.

Many Thanks!!!

Now had my golf running, there seems to be a clip which is on the swing arm of the metering unit which was stopping fuel getting to the injectors. Metering unit arm/flap wasn't opening unless pushed by hand up and down. The clip was adjusted and it then ran after a fuel pump & lift pump change  plus testing of relay and all electrics. Today after refitting a 4 branch manifold (which was leaking) with new gaskets and a new inlet manifold gasket it happened yet again!!This was probably due to the fact my friend has played about with the metering unit and the clip yet again thinking He could fine tune it with feeler gages to make it run better!!!Arrrrrr!! I'm hoping with adjustment of the metering unit clip it will once again work when I work on car today but it does turn over and start for a few seconds but then dies. :-(  Apparently the clip needs to be adjusted so that there is a 1mm gap so that the metering unit arm/flap is left open so when you turn engine over it starts. I'm not clued up on this but it seems the only fault now. I wish my mate hadn't have touched the clip at all since we got it running as I thought the timing was slightly out due to the dizzy.

Oh well roll on 9am, there just aren't enough hours in the day and all I want to do is get my golf running, tune it up sort out 1 or 2 easy fixes and take it for an mot so I can drive it before the dark winter months come in!! Cam belt is fitted properly, compression is good at 13-14 and I'm told with the high lift cam it will go like mad once we've cured the problems. :-)

If you've done that much work and have photographs then you MUST start a project thread

I give you credit for fixing a rusty mk2, well done sir
most people decide to scrap them and find a good shell because lets face it ,there still are many about.

I have scrapped a few in the past , but im tired of killing.

I'm new to all this forum pages and clubs so don't have a clue about about doing a thread but will give it a go when I have spare time. Still busy, now going to change the achulator to see if this solves my problems. I do have a spare gti I'm breaking at the moment but intend on welding the shell up and prepping it all up for sale as just a shell. 1985 B reg 3 door, 1.8 8v, have lots of spares going.
