Exhaust Probelms P Reg 16V
« on: 10 September 2011, 09:40 »
Hi,
The car failed it's MOT becuse the back box has gone, the local garage cant find a suitable replacement, they've told me they tried 8 different types from all the local dealers but non fit, i've just rang the local VW dealer and they want £240 for the back box alone.
Anyone else had the same problem.

Cheers

If this were me the first thing i would do is take it to another garage, they seem incompetent

I do'nt suppose the exhaust on your car was an aftermarket full system  ?.Maybe it was made as a complete system so a standard box will no longer fit.

They come up on Ebay very often but be aware of whats actually on offer.I  have seen a few where they say stainless but what they really have is only stainless boxes with mild steel piping.Stainless steel comes in various grades, good stainless will not attract a magnet at all, cheaper stuff will.

I got my Powerflow cat back system for £160 from a guy about 5 miles away.He paid just under £500 for it less than 6 months earlier (have receipts).Took car in for mot and inner sills were gone big time which coincided with a Cosworth Sierra he wanted so he just broke the car up and sold the parts.

Ya pays ya money..................

I bet they are trying to fit an 8v box on!
16v is a different size!

No idea where you are located but I am willing to bet there is a local motor factors with a backbox in stock.
Best of all if there is a Eurocarparts local they can deliver!

Cheers for the advice, the garage managed to get hold of one, as you say may have been trying to fit a standard GTI exhaust.
Anyway all sorted £200 for the middle section and back box, not to bad considering its not moved off the drive for 18 months, no recommedation apart from the exhaust, just need to get the tax and it's back to driving the car. instead of the missus mini.

Thanks again for all your help
