Couldnt get a decent enough rate on the finance due to outstanding balances on credit cards from my wedding afew months ago so decided to wait until after christmas when i've cleared the cards

Yes, very sensible. The mk3 will be cheap motoring whilst you get yourself straight. Mk6's are coming down in price all the time and after a few months with a mk3 the mk6 will seem almost as good as an R32!!
