Hi guys, been through lots of other threads but struggling and I know some of you really know your onions on the 8v's.

Having what seems to be pretty common -  8v gti cutting out, almost cutting out and erratic/tempramental idle speed problem that seems to plague many mk3's. I have the AGG (R reg) model.

When idling, the rev's drop down and the car sounds like it is stuttering, then the rev's even out - even a quick burst on the accelerator can upset it again.  Also when approaching junctions, clutch goes in or gear into neutral the rev counter goes right down, oil light, battery light etc comes on, sometimes it does stall other times the engine just about recovers, then stutters erratically again or just calms down.

Previously car has had new MAF unit and coil pack.  HT leads and SP's were new two years ago and recently checked.  Also had a new crank shaft sensor about a year ago as the car totally died on me one a long run.

My breather hose has split in half and a new one going on this weekend but i'm not convinced this is the problem?  also going to clean the throttle body this weekend - maybe the problem?  i understand the AGG's don't have an Idle Stablisation Valve?

If non if these, is it easier to get one of those diagnostic tests done by VW to try and source problem? do they always tell you where the problem is? rough cost?  Money is usually the bottom line here!

could this also be;

 - the lamda sensor ? where is this located on the 8v AGG engine? the Haynes manual is pretty useless when it comes to AGG referencing!

 - distributor?

I know this problem is common but people never seem to get to the bottom of it!  Very frustrating!!

Any help appreciated.  Apologies if this has been covered more precisely in another thread as it can be annoying.

Thanks v much

Well on mine it was broken breather hoses and dirty throttle body. Breather hoses I taped up with amalgamating tape for diagnostics, made a slight difference but can't be that sure. Throttle body was pretty horrible so I cleaned it out and everything went back to normal, so that'd definitely be my first step if it happened again.

I didn't even take mine off the car. Took pipe off it, sprayed a sh!t load of carb cleaner in there and wiped around with a cloth. Repeated that a few times.. Then started it, started like a bag of sh**, revved it a bit and took it for a spin. Problem solved. Make sure you open the throttle valve by hand and clean as far in as you can reach.

ok thanks will give that a go! my breather hose is in two halves right now, so sounds like a logical starting place - just didn't think it would have that much of an effect on the said problem...

Mine was doing this...also 8v AGG R reg....took throttle body Partially off, gave it a good clean with carb cleaner and it has never looked back. I did it around 4 weeks ago. I even spent a little bit of time trying to make it stall at junctions but it wouldn't.

You may find it idles a little high at first. It soon settles down.
