VW Noob saying hello!
« on: 23 August 2011, 18:47 »
Hullo there!

First off - thanks everyone for putting/keeping together such an awesome collection of information for all things VW, I've already saved myself £100's just from the little tips and tricks I've skimmed from thesse forums in the week or so I've been around!

So, got me a '98 golf Mk3 GTi, 8v (I know, I know, it's apparently not the best, but it's my first "proud to have this" car and I don't drive like I used to 10 years ago, so at least the motorway milage will be sweet!). As is the usual for a noob buying a used car, I thought I got it cheap until I realised how many small (but relatively expensive) things needed doing.

So, I've bitten the bullet, done what I can myself and spending the cash to get the rest sorted properly, and maybe learning a thing or two on the way. Heh, I might even try my hand at replacing maybe the brakes myself next time. Who knows...

I just wish I still lived up in North wales, where my Dad used to have a car pit in the garage... how useful would that be right now!

Thanks guys :)

I had a generic service/brakes job done and replaced the mid exhaust box, and I need to get the reverse idle sorted (it's bloody noisy - it's not popping out of gear or giving me any hassle in other gears, but I want it done if only for peace of mind). I'm trying to find someone local who can recondition just the reverse gear to try and save some cash - but asking for worst case quotes at the same time just to get a good estimate of what I'm going to have to pay.

The current work that I can do on my own is the gear shift linkage - the relay shaft has come loose at the bottom - so there's a clanging noise when I move the stick back and forward. I have the repair kit from ebay, just a matter of getting down to it, and hoping the bracket itself isn't too worn out to receive the new shaft.

Remote locking kit will go in at the weekend, new radio is fitted and glove box handle has been fixed. I'm good with electronics/PCs (that's my trade) but a bit less confident when it comes to the mechanics...

Wow, just been given a quote of £740 for reconditioning the gearbox...

I think I'll be looking out for decent second hand box and taking it to be fitted - I'm certainly not up to fitting it myself, but I've found a couple of garages that are willing to fit a bought part for labour cost, so I should be able to get it all done for much less. I hope...
