Starting problem...
« on: 31 August 2011, 07:14 »
Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum, from Australia! Might as well say a bit of a g'day while i'm at it; i have a mk4 r32 and a mk1 GLD with a 1.6L conversion with a bit of engine work. Short and simple, never the less, hello.

I come to you guys with a problem I have, and it's driving me nuts. The other week i did a little bit of tidying up in the engine bay in which i removed some of the wires that appeared to be leading no where, basically just pulled the clip out and thats all she wrote. Now, i've gone away for a week (and can't actually recall if I started it or not after doing this and prior leaving  :banghead: ), then got back, went to start it up and nothing happened....

I can hear the fuse tick when i turn the key into accessories, and then when i turn it to ignition, but nothing happens. I can't even hear the starter motor ticking or anything. So something's telling me the power isn't getting to the starter?

The electrics in the cabin seem to be working, I still get headlights/indicators/radio etc. I've tested the battery in my other mk1 golf and it seems to be able to kick it over.

I've checked my earths, they all seem to be ok. I have one from the chassis/gearbox, 1 to chassis/strut tower. As far as the alternator goes, i got a new power lead for it and have it from the top stud on the alternator to the (+) terminal, and i know the bottom stud is a "built in" earth or whatever, but i ran a wire from that to the chassis/gearbox to make sure. Still with no luck!

Could it be fuses? They all look OK to me, but it just seems that the starter isn't receiving power, it doesn't click or anything. Does anyone have a link where i can find a good early bullet style fuse chart for the mk1? I've had a long look and can't find anything!

I've tried the battery in another MK1 i have and it turns it over, i also put my battery pack on it to make sure and still nothing, so i don't think bad battery is the case...

I hope someone can help, it's driving me nuts!!!

-Drew.

Welcome.....

It's hard to pinpoint your problem from reading, better to be there and be able to look but you're a bit far!  Where were these wires that led to nowhere?...

Only time I had a similar problem was when the trigger wire for the starters solenoid lost its grip and fell off!...

It wont be a fuse but here is a useful link for early and late boxes.

Yeah, i'm aware it's quite hard to diagnose over the internet, just seeing if I can get any recommendations of what to try!

I'm going to get a multimeter tomorrow and test the connections to the starter motor. I'm nearly thinking/hoping it's a result of a faulty starter motor...

In that case, give it a wack!.... Solenoid might be stuck.
