New 8v gti owner and some questions to go with it
« on: 04 August 2011, 19:43 »
Just a few questions if you guys can help, ive done a few searches on here but just want a bit more info if you can help.

I have no door pins so i bought some and went to screw them in only to find there is no connecting rod, after doing a search on here it seems they are removed as they rattle quite annoyingly. Looking over the car it looks like its had a bit of a sound system in the past as its fully sound proofed, they've done a good job too as its very quiet. Should i just live without the door pins? Do people put an indicating light on there?

I need a rear silencer, my car has a stupid peco back box on it. I've been quoted 58 quid for a standard back box. What prices are stainless systems? I dont want any kind of noise.

The idle is a little lumpy, i've used cleaner in the throttle body and its not made any difference yet, whats the next thing to try?

Also whats the manual clutch cable i need? Cause the auto clutch cable is notchy.

Mucho thanks guys.

I would just put the door pins back on. You could also get some aftermarket ones that are a little fatter so they dont rattle as much. Have a look in the classifieds for a SH backbox, can get a stainless steel one for very little tbh. Lumpy idle after clean of the TB, check your crankcase breather hose for splits, and vaccum hoses for leaks. What year is your car? Earlier (before 96 I think) had the manual adjust cable, after had the auto adjust. Some switch from Auto adjust to manual even in later cars, as it gives you an indication when its on its way out. They are pretty cheap and very easy to replace either way. Auto clutch has the ribbed end, and manual has a thread and nut setup.
Hope this helps mate.

Door pins.....

pretty easy to put some led's up there, a lot of effort to plug the little hole though, could just glue some nice aftermarket door pins in place if your looking to fill the hole

Exhaust

Just checked ebay, plenty for sale on there standard and "enhanced" types

Lumpy idle

plugs, leads, cap, rotor or an air leak on a perished hose maybe. worth checking all of those before engaging panic mode

Clutch cable, not sure i understand the question, do you mean the automatic adjuster on the cable is notchy and jumping or is the inner frayed and catching inside the guide.

find me on skype : paul.taylor.999 .. Vagcom reads for all, with a free cup of tea

The car is a '96

Will take a look on ebay re. the exhaust

I think i need to get the rod that connects to the door pins, guess all will come clear when i remove the door cards this weekend, currently there is nothing to screw the door pins into.

I'll take a look over the hoses and electrics see if i can find a fault.

The clutch cable came about because the clutch actuation is a little notchy, i've lubricated it thinking it was just dry, it made it a little better but i suspect the clutch is on its way out and i cant really tell because of the auto clutch adjust. Biting point is around 2/3rds up with final third just doing nothing and its a little grabby.

I should probably say i've had a mk3 1.8 driver before and dont remember any clutch issues, been driving a toyota van since then but it was time to return to a car. Very different driving experience.

Biting point seems to be about right in comparison to mine and others that have spoken about it on here. Cant say for certain until at least the end of the w.end when my lump goes back in with a new clutch and cable though, I will then be able to tell the difference.

Just realised the plastic sleeve that hold the dipstick is broken and the dip stick wobbles. Would gsf sell this part?
