The smoke in the morning is almost certainly oil that has dripped down overnight into the cylinder due to worn valve guide oil seals.

Not sure why the backfiring has started as I can't see it being anything to do with the fillerneck.........only thing I can think is maybe some sh1t/rust got into the fuel system whilst it was being changed. Might be well worthwhile changing your fuel filters and checking the pick-up strainer.

Perhaps the back firing is a timing or fuel mixture issue? As rich said, it's hard to see the link between the fuel neck and the back firing but then again maybe it's because everything (bad) generally comes in three's!

I had my oil seals replaced a while ago and was surprised at how cheap and quick it was so don't fret too much about major expense. These things wear out so it's not uncommon.

At least you've got your fuel neck sorted which is a source of major ball ache if it screws up the fuel system.

Good luck

The fact that it is back-firing means there is something not right and will almost certainly be linked with your virtual stalling in 2nd gear.
