I used to have a Mk2 16v GTI. It was a great car, much more fun than the Mk3 16v I had.
Never had a problem with the Mk2's 1.8 16v engine (even after 155k miles), my only problem with it was rust in the floor which needed welding for the MOT. So as said, when looking at Mk2s check the condition of the shell, everything else can be replaced.

Swapping a 2.0 16v engine into a Mk2 from a Mk3 GTI is a common upgrade and relatively easy.
Even if you're not doing the engine swap, the 1.8 16v engine is decent and with brake and suspension upgrades can be a fun car on the track.

As for doors, I liked my 3 door Mk2, but I did miss having the back doors, but if it's only a toy and you don't need it to be practical, then 3doors is fine.

I don't see the point in the 2.0 conversion. All you've gained is 11bhp.

Drive one.

I'd go 3-door as if you're caging it (from the previous thread) then the pillars will line up with the cage IIRC.  Easier to clamber in and out of buckets with wider doors, too.

Thing is (and this is something I've repeated before) if you're buying it to track and drive hard you will get far more bang for your buck with a Golf3 16V, stripped out.

Golf2s are too dear for what they are now for a toy, unless you can find one attached to a convenient and unwitting coffin-dodger.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

You are FAIL.

If you've been out in a well put together ABFed Golf2 you'll know why I am saying this.

The engine and gearbox are the only bits from the Golf3 worth having.

No, don't think so.

Think what you like.

You're wrong.

If you're not wrong then you'd better provide some strong reasoning.

I think you should.

I have to agree that the best bits from a late MK3 are the engines and boxes.

what other engines do you recommend then?

You love all valvers really.
