I make gates and railings for a living atm, all we do is use a zink based primer followed by a single coat of hammerite style gloss black. Never have any problems with rust etc, my boss encourages people not to bother with powder coating even though he can make a little extra dosh by powdercoating.

just for the future... CQ's do these for about £28 each refurbished

I did exactly the same with mine as you though... sanded them down and hammerite x 2 coats.. pretty much the same result too
