Fuel + Turning Signal Problem.

Right, where should I start :-(

1). Firstly, my car keeps cutting out every so often and wont start again until its been stood for a while.

The engine turns over fine, and will even start running for a couple of seconds then die.
Then it wont start again.

I think its a fuel problem, as I do have a rusty filler neck, but the inline fuel filter in the engine is brand new.

Is there another fuel filter some where, if so where is it.

2). None of my turning signals work.
All the bulbs are ok, and they all work when you put the hazards on.

But when you put either the left or right indicator on, then they dont flash, and the green turning indicator light on the dash just stays lit BRIGHT green.

I've noticed though, that the green turning indicator light on the dash is constantly on, but its dimly lit.

The only way I can get around the problem, is by rocking the hazard warning light switch a little, not so the hazards come on, but just enough to turn the dimly lit turning indicator light on the dash, off.

If I do this, then the indicators work fine.

Any sugestions would be most helpfull.

I can't offer any help with the electrics but from bitter experience I can offer advice on the fuel problem.

As far as i'm aware there are two filters, one close or even in the tank and another easily accessible one on the fuel line in the engine (on mine it's to the left of the carb as you stand facing the car, about position 8 or 9 on a clockface).

These will filter out general rubbish but if you've got a rusty neck (not personally!) chances are there is rust in the fuel tank. Small particles work their way past the filters and into the carb.

Clean this out, replace the rusty fuel filler neck and either try and flush the tank out or buy a new tank. It's hassle but it's the only solution to guarantee you get rid of the rust. And Waxoyl under the rear arch like a nutter once you've put the new parts on!

This problem drove me mad as every single time I drove mine I knew that every journey would take twice as long due to the car cutting out. I used to be constantly on edge waiting to see how far I could get before thing stalled.

If you decide you want a new tank then let me know and I'll give you the number of a guy in London who breaks Mk1's and doesn't charge the earth. i've had loads of bits from him from doors to alloys. The prices he asks and quality of the parts he charges make it well worth the trip from Norwich to London to pick up.

Thanks for that Phil, I was going to replace the filler neck soon anyway, but there £96+vat in GSF carparts :-(

Does anyone know if you can modify the mark 1 tin top filler neck to fit ?? As its much cheaper

Good news Filler Necks are only £36 + vat in http://www.eurocarparts.com, im off there now to get one :-)

Still need the indicators sorting though :-(
