Just a thankyou. After all of the problems with cutting out and the mechanic (amongst many other things) changed the crank sensor to still have the same problem. I followed your advice and had another crank sensor put on but I took it to the vdub garage who were pretty good to be fair. I waited for the problem to creep back in again (literally driving a long perched on the edge of my seat waiting to lose my brakes and power steering at any moment) but the problem seems to have been fixed! So thanks again, I don't think I would have ever got to the bottom of it without the advice from this forum.
