hi mate for stuff like shocks etc i use a small garage call lion road garage speak to jeff or bob on 02088077286 they are very good and are not cowboys, they are at n9 9dn very near edmonton green station, beware they can be very busy. they did a cambelt for me on a valver a couple of years back for £80 iirc 
basic servicing and running probs i do myself, its just stuff i havent the tools for when i use them

So they have good knowledge when it comes to MK1 gti cabrio's? Last place i went to took ages on trying to find the right hose that would fit (didnt know much about the car).
Thanks and maybe we could meet up sometime for a drive. you can give me lessons on basic servicing, running probs wink wink (save myself a few pennies lol)

In the mean time have scan through HERE  Plenty of up to date info and maintenance stuff on MK1's.

bob used to own a mk1 but they have very good knowledge on all cars. i dont mind showing how to do a service but as for going for a 'drive' together, that sounds really ghey  so i'll give that a miss
