why did i wait so long to get a GTI?

had my 99 1.8T for eight weeks now. only been around to drive it for two weeks though, work away. love it to bits, have a few questions to put to you guys with alot more experience than me.
1. how do you keep the sh!t out of the tailgate lock? have been using wd40 regularly
2. is it safe, if so where is best to get a bit more power. price and nottingham area. also insurance issues. have got powerflow stainless system already.
3. best way to get GTI badge off the back. worried that some brain dead moron from down the road will have it away, as happened with my old 1.1 saxo!!!!!!
4. also i get a funny rattle on start up in the cold. only lasts for about a second but is quite loud, close to bulkhead area. don't think its belts as dosn't sound right for that?
