Subframe swap questions
« on: 14 June 2011, 10:36 »
I want to go 5-stud on the Vento and remember reading here that the best/easiest way to do this is to swap in a GTI subframe. I'm still a n00b at DIYing things and I'm wondering, is this a garage job? It looks like two jacks in the back garden wouldn't be enough to do the job correctly. If it is a garage job, how many hours would it normally take? As far as I know everything bolts in without issue, the only differences are the 5 stud brakes and the arb.
Speaking of the arb, the Vento is dropped ~100mm, will this cause clearance issues with the gti arb like on the mk4?
One last question, since the 5 stud brakes are larger than the 4 stud installed am I right in thinking that I'll need a GTI master cylinder too?
Thanks in advance

You dont need the whole subframe just wishbones and hubs

Well that makes life a lot easier. How difficult is it to change out the wishbones?

wishbones aren't too hard.  Get the ones with pre-fitted bushes, then its just a swap out, etc.

Read my blog and Dan Reeds (linked to) guides : http://javalins.wordpress.com/2011/03/11/mk3-golf-notes-on-bushes-changes/

few other earlier posts (page 2 & 3) too

You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

at the back you need to do a disc conversion, there are no drums that I know of which are 5x100 that swap on. you may be able to get some redrilled, but that would be a bit of a pain

5 stud front hubs wont fit 4 stud shafts, need to change the outer c/vs to 5 stud ones at the very least or just change entire shafts if thats easier for you.  a couple options for 5 stud:

1. press 5 stud hubs into 4 stud bearing carriers, allows you to leave all the rest of the running gear alone, just swap outer cvs. problem here is either need to redrill 4stud discs, or fit 280mm setup and buy early passat b3 vr6 discs:
357 615 301 A - 280 brake disc, 5x100 - 38.83+VAT

2. fit 5stud bearing carriers complete with mk3 gti wishbones and roll bar

3. fit 5stud bearing carriers but use later passat 5 stud wishbones which allow you to keep your old roll bar
