electric window problems
« on: 06 April 2005, 11:45 »
hi all, well im due to pick another mk2 16v Gti up on thurs/fri and have been advised that both front electric windows aren't currently working, i hope this is something simple? i was thinking it could be a fuse or relay but don't know exactly how the system works, if all else fails it could be two new window motors?

any suggestions on what the problem is likely to be?

thanks in advance!

could be fuse/relay or switches or most likely the connectors in the door have got wet and scummy and preventing current getting to the motors, i would try new connections onto the motors first (providing their is current to the motors, use a voltmeter) or the motors may have seized with the damp or something, try some wd40 in the motors as well

Hi Rich1,

I had a simular problem, i bought an f plate golf mk2 git 16v which working electric windows as the winter turned up they both stopped working.

I was checking all the cabling and the fuses for weeks with out finding the cause of tjhe problem.

So i decided to remove the motor from the door, remove the 5 screws to release the steel plate, put some greese and WD40 (you will see a small wheel with the wire wrapped round) then place the plate back in place.

Also theres another part to the device, there's two screws connecting the motor, remove these two screws and put some more WD40 in, out all back together and they shoudl work. They did for me.!

Good luck

You can always test the motors by connecting the staright to a battery.

I needed to do this when swapping the mechanism's over from door to door to get the nuts and bolts in the right place. If the motors work fine then you know that its the switches that are at fault.

I had a problem with the switches in the centre console once.

The fuse and relay are on top of the fuses. The fuse should be a heat cutout type(looks like a fuse but with a metal cover). You could try replacing this with a 30amp fuse.Usally if the switches are playing up windows are OK in one direction,up or down. You can take these apart and clean the contacts, this is a bit awkward.
