8v PB engine not starting
« on: 19 May 2011, 23:03 »
Weird one here - Golf GTI 1.8 8v , PB engine code

Drove the GTI out of the driveway and onto the road so I could clean the TT. Started first time although idle is a little rough when cold. It has never yet failed on me...

However went to move it back 4 hours later and the car won't start. Dash lights illuminate, I can hear the fuel pump priming and there is definitely charge in the battery. There is no click whatsoever from the starter when the key is turned

I've shoved it back onto the driveway as we are now away for the weekend

The fact it has charge but no starter motor activity leads me to think a fault in wiring in the ignition or a relay

Suggestions?

Get a spare spark plug, unplug a lead and leave it on the rocker cover. Get a friend to turn the car over for you and see if there is a spark.

It's not even turning the starter.

Try giving the starter a wack with a hammer.

Clean up all the positive and earth connections, especially on starter. As above, whack it.

Turn the key so all the lights are on and you can here the pump running, then get a length of wire from the battery+ and touch it on the terminal on the starter motor with the thin(ish) red/black wire. If it turns over it will be your ignition switch at fault.

Starter motor wasn't playing nicely at all over the last few days, so swapped it out today for a 2nd hand £30 replacement - started first time :)

Discovered a wee water leak when I was under the car, so the metal coolant pipe will need to be replaced now

I recently did the metal water pipe replacement, not wishing to teach anyone to suck eggs, but removing the oil filter makes it a lot lot easier. and as you will have the coolant drained out might be worth checking the condition of the two plastic water flanges.
