cam belt
« on: 06 June 2011, 08:17 »
hi all! ive moved over from the mk3 section due to maybe be buying a mk4 from a mate.
the mk4 needs a cambelt change and i have done search on here and there is lots of info and many ways for changing belt.
i have done cam belts in the past and my most recent was 2.0l 16v vectra which i had no probs with.
i have always lined the timing marks on cam and crank and had no probs.
what would be the best way to change mk4 belt? marking the belt and lining up flywheel marks? or is just a case of lining up cam and crank top dead centres and fitting belt?
also where can i buy the complete belt kit from for decent price?
any advice would be great!  cheers dan

Sounds about right. Take off the air box and turn the engine over and you should see the fly wheel is marked as well to get the crank inline. My belt for a 1,8t was tight going on so had to loosen off the guide pulley to get the belt on.

What engine is in the mk4, as if it is a 1.8 then replace the water pump at the same time.

Water pump with brass impellor ftw! Even though the revised vw ones are an improved design.

I changed mine last week, fiddly job, but steady away,   I just marked the cam and crank gears, slipped old belt off, new belt on, new hydraulic tensioner, idler pulley etc.

However,i have a noise, only on cold start up, and it is the labelling on the belt,  double checked everything, torque settings and all, but three noise iya still there.

Hopefully after a few hundered miles it wil have worn off?

red something about that noise! aint it the accessory belt rubbing on the cover, apparently you have to sure there is a gap!

Definately got the gap, noise is in sync with the label passing over the can gear.

Still there with upper cover removed, has "faded" alot this weekend, can hardly hear anything and only from cold.

Still worried me when I was 40 miles from home and it started squeaking!
