Just found a  big crack in my ('87 golf 16 v) catalytic converter and been quoted £235 plus VAT   for a new one.........what's my alternative?
Is it worth me looking at stainless option?
What have you guys/galls done?
Cheers
Ben

why do you have/need a CAT? only cars after 1992 must have them as std

why dont you just get a CAT replacement pipe?

I know i don't need a cat, i just thought that the cat was a part of the down pipes (well looking at it anyway), and was unsure of the alternatives. I don't want to have a cat as i know that they are very restrictive.
Do you have a cat by pass on your car? if so where could i get one from? an how much am i looking at?
Thanks for the promt reply

loads of people make them as part of a system. you could get an exhaust place to make one up, or buy the non cat version of your centre pipes, but if it was me i'd save a bit of money and get a full stainless system thats supplied without the sh!tty cat! you'll have a much better system that'll last for ages.

I have a full scorpion system on the car, it's just that the cat is part of the downpipes!!
is ok any way as i had a closer look yesterday an the cat isn't cracked the scorpion system had just come a bit loose an was blowing, so i adjusted an it is no more!!!
Don't know why some had cats an some didn't, in fact i didn't know it had a cat until i had a good look the other day :embarassed: bit strange on an '87 car, but good forward thinkin on vw's part , i suppose

No 16v golf mk2 for the English market has a cat.
Is it an import? what is your engine code? it won't be KR.

I think you are mistaking the cat for a section of the exhaust.
What does it say on the petrol cap as in what fuel it takes?
The 9A engine comes with a cat and a closed loop lambda system, but this is only fitted to the corrado, passat and USA golf.

:embarassed: Think you're prob right golfvr6 as the petrol cap just says to use 98 ron petrol, not unleadded, doh
