Golf Clipper Cab
« on: 05 April 2005, 22:15 »
Evening all - following Spurgey's message of the 25 March, I'm the mate who was looking at a Mk 1 Clipper Cab (thanks for all the tips), and ended up buying one
Pretty sound I think, 89G plate, 88K, 3 owners & FSH, and pretty much original

Couple of problems that I need to sort - there is a bit of an oil leak, which appears to be coming from where the drive-shaft goes into the engine - presumably there are seals here that can be replaced? - any other common areas that I should check out?

and problems with the idle speed - fluctuates between 1500, down to 800, up to 2000, regardless of engine temp, driving me a bit nuts (and I see that this appears to be a regular prob from other messages posted).

Not sure when the cam belt was last changed - what is the recommended mileage for this (though will probably get it done soon anyway)

Will post a couple of pictures on here, when I can figure out how to do it!!

Would welcome any replies - cheers

Firstly welcome to the site, I do not know about the oil leak but for your other issues I'd suggest getting a full service on it if you don't know when it had the last one or it is due, then while in the garage ask them to give it a tune and set up the carbs correctly as they might need adjusting. If you do not know when the cambelt was last change you need to do this as the cost of replacing it is not as bad as the cost of repairing it.  When you get the cambelt done, ensure that they also change the timing belt tensioner, this is only an extra £25 from VAG and they can easily do this when they replace the belt. I had my belt and tensioner done a few months ago for £112, the belt was about £11 and the tensioner £25, the rest was labour and VAT.  Then all there is to say, bring on the summer.
......now officially dubless.
