Can I change a passenger seat into a drivers?
« on: 23 March 2005, 20:33 »
I have the dreaded worn bolster/seat cloth on my drivers seat. I have found a pair of similar trim seats (rainbow) with similar wear to the drivers seat.

Is there any way to take the passenger seat and convert to a drivers? Without doing the cloth swap thing. I dont know how the mechanism works on the bottom, but was wondering if I could just use the whole passenger seat and bolt on the bottom drivers mechanism to retain the reclining functionality. Or am I hoping for a simple fix that doesnt exist?

if your not fussed about adjustment then you can swap them over but you'll have everything on the wrong side and the back/forth adjustment won't line up. the only real way is to strip both bases and use the best bits of both to make one decent drivers seat. its not tricky if you take your time and dont try to cut/break anything.

In the middle of a bolster change at the moment.  Totally agree with Joe- take your time!  If you are stripping the cloth off the base then check the retaining strip which runs through the cushion and make sure you disconnect the copper rings.  It will tear the foam, otherwise.  Good luck!

You know the adjustment on the front bottom of the drivers seat. Its a sort of height & angle adjust combined. Well whatever thats called, can I remove that from the drivers seat and bolt it onto the ar5e of the passenger one? UKMRW1 you seem to be in the middle of it, so does it look like thats possible? Seem less hassle than the whole removing cover bit. How long would you estimate the job takes? Luckily I have sourced spares so I can still use my car therefore dont need to rush it.

Uh, hum.  Honestly, I don't know.  I've taken the back and the base apart (just remove the sprung washers on the hinge) and then carefully undone the wire at the back oof the base to remove it all.  If you are talking about the slide leaver and height adjuster I have just left them alone and used a donor bolster for the base.  Sorry if that doesn't help you!

Job done

Before

During

After

Wasn't as bad as I thought - took a couple of hours. It's one of those bleeding knuckles jobs but not too difficult. All that's needed now is a good shampoo - next weekend's project will be hiring a VAX and doing the whole interior.

Thanks for all the help.
