cd player
« on: 04 September 2003, 10:47 »
my golf has the normal stereo but when i touch the cd button it says 'no cd changer' hence i take it it does not have a cd player. how much would it cost if i wanted to keep the current stereo and add a cd playing facilty (i.e. cd changer) and would this have to be done through a dealer or can i do it cheaper by myself.

You dont say what Golf you have or what stereo. It will be far cheaper to do it yourself than go through a dealer as there are a number of companies that sell OE that is compatible with existing head units. Alternatively you can now buy wires that will allow you to run non standard changer, ets with your existing stereo. Take a look at www.incar-discount.co.uk as they sell everything you need at competitive prices. I have a 97 GTI and the original stereo is a sony that has a tape player but is also CD changer compatible. I bought a Sony 6 CD changer for ?99 that plugs directly into the head unit and works using the exsing controls....that is over ?100 cheaper than Halfords who are still selling the changer (a year later) for this stupid price.

A lot of head units these days have the option of cd changer so its just a case of buying one and running the wires to it. The factory fit gamma radios on the latest vw's I think even have the wiring in place so you just need to buy the chnager and plug it into the wirse already there.

its a golf 1.4S 2001 model and the radio is the factory built gamma radio, will this have the wires in place as the cheapest CD changer for OE is  ?160, anything less than that? also are there any sites showing rough guides on installation of cd changers etc as ive not done this sort of thing before.
