If you have drilled holes in the airbox on the front you will be letting hot air from the rad straight in!
But even so that shouldnt make much difference to mpg.
Fault lies elsewhere!

I have now sealed the holes and have ordered a temp sender from VW that will be here tomorrow! I am in your part of the world in a few weeks, going to PM Billy and see if he is about.
