The mk2 Golf has two different types of front strut, sealed and insert (or non-sealed as it's sometimes called). To make the replacement easier get the sealed unit, regardless of whether you've got inserts on the car now, as this is sooo much easier than having to funk about getting the insert out.
It's been said many times before that if your std shocks are relatively new and in good nick, try the Eibach springs with the std shocks as they work very well together - I think they are about a 35-40mm drop, and are about £115 depending on where you buy them.
