may be breaking my gti 2.0 16v preg 1997
what sort of prices do the engine and gearbox go for
cant seem to find many to compare 
no rattles or knocks etc and good clutch

mileage is 140000 and got tones of receipts for new parts etc

Service history doesnt mean much nowadays tbh, plenty of garages I know of dont change half of the stuff if any at all that they are supoiosed to if they think it looks alright. This is main dealers too not just private garages. If the work has been carried out by the owner though thats different
