mot failure question as noob to golfs

my golf went in for an mot, sound investment for a track car that i bought and not built imo.

The offside front (inner) track rod ball joint has excessive play.
Steerin column movement between shaft and steering wheel??

im unsure about these two items as i can only see one track rod end and i thought it would be classed as outer not inner on the OS


car failed on other things but this and a bit of welding for:

Nearside front subframe mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded. The rest i can do myself like front pads, headlamp aim (garage will do).

any help would be greatly appreciated

Yes they do have an inner joint which is covered by the gaitor, so not sure what he is on about.

I suspect the uj at the base of the column has worn

if you grab the road wheel top and bottom look along the track rod you will see it lift inside the boot, there is usually a collar which if you peel back the boot you can see. if the wear isnt to bad it can be tightened to take up the play

thanks lads. Gives me something to look at later as i need to get the wheels off to do the brakes.

Talking of brakes can i remove some fluid from the resevoir to give me space to push the pistons back to fit the new pads??

Just knock the cap off, wind the pistons in and then pop the cap back on. No need to remove any fluid as it shouldn't push the level up the pot by much.
