mk4 golf gti 1.8 20v starts but cuts out after a few seconds? help please

hi just bought this gti 20v as abit of a project it was cat c front end but previous owner replaced panels.
he says engine is fine but ive never heard it running as the battery was dead.
when i tried to start it, it starts up but cuts out after 2 or 3 seconds, ive tried to rev it up when it starts but this does nothing.
can any1 help at all? id rather fix this up but id hate to have 2 break it. thanx

sounds like immobiliser kicking in, get vag-com on it and check ecu and dash codes to confirm

is that what it sounds like? id rather be sure before i pay 4 a auto electicion 2 come out.

mine was doing this and i did my research the yellow car(immo) symble was flashing my mates did this he was told too take it vw and he ended up payin £45 to get it sorted
all i did with mine was charge the battery
