gti pinking???

Alrite all,My mk2 gti(8v) seems to make a pinking noise when driven hard or labouring up hill.Driven normal or less eagerly the noise doent appear.Its standard apart from a k&n intake kit.

I cleaned the intake and have put some new bosch leads and super 4 plugs aswell as new arm and cap today. (skint ass now lol)The noise is still apparent,Im wondering if it could be a timing issue or something.

Any ideas?

Where is the knock sensor??And what does it do??

And where do i get one from??

from a mk3 golf in a scrapyard or an old audi. They are free when you accidently put them in your pocket.
Its just to the right of alternater its got a bolt through the middle and a wire coming off it. Probably find half the plastic cover is missing.

if the shroud on the cable is missing it wont work properly.

my old 8v digi pinked when hot under load, and even with proper timing setup (RJs guide) and a new knock sensor it still pinked when hot. it was on 245k miles though

I have been looking on the net but its fried my brain.The code on mine says 034 905 377H and when i rang vw they said it has changed  and its now 054 905 377G and i keep seeing another code number which is 0261231038 lol.

So could i just fit one from any golf??? Or do i need to get the proper one??

Chris that is what mine is doing,Its fine for a bit and then when i give it a bootfull when its warm i get the noise.

my 91 mk2 does the same on 95ron unleaded, goes away on tesco 99 or shell v power

yep mine was horrendous on 95 ron, it would pink even on a consistent run. On 98 ron it was perfect unless i'd been stuck in traffic or at McD's drivethrough for 10 mins, then when i opened it up on the roads it would pink like buggery

if the rings are f**ked and thers loads of oil vapor going down the inlet they'll pink.   

sometimes they'll pink if the injectors are shagged, but knock sensor often fixes it any vw one with a plug that'll fit and a long enough wire will fit
