Leak in drivers door well
« on: 23 February 2011, 18:05 »
Hi there, Im new to this forum so please bare with me. I have just purchased a mk 3 gti 8v and just gave it a good wash with a jet hose.
I noticed the drivers door well was damp. I have checked the door seals and they seem ok. It does not have a sunroof.
Please can someone point me in the right direction to get it fixed before it drives me mad?

The common places to look when searching for a leak are the drainage holes under the front scuttle panel. Located where the bulkhead meets the wing. Pour water in these and it should come out at the bottom of the wing.
Also as said the doors can leak. Remove the door card and there should be drainage holes at the bottom of the doors. I had a leak here even though the drainage holes were clear the water was not running out and getting into the car. If you see a pool of water in the bottom of the door then do what I did and drill a small hole in the bottom of the door.
Another place to check is the aerial. The rubber sealing ring perishes and lets in the water.
Other than that it will be through the heater matrix which is a pretty big job. You should be able to tell by checking where your carpet is wet.

Thanks for the advice, I dont think it is the heater matrix as it would be too much of a coincidence of it leaking just after I jet washed the car,
I will check the drainage holes under the scuttle panel, aerial and the door holes.

very much appreciated

Just realised what you said about the heater matrix, where abouts on the carpet would it be wet if it was that?
Its only damp on the floor level. I checked around the pedals and all the other fittings and they appear dry.

Thanks

Heater matrix would wet the carpet around the centre console. Drainage holes under scuttle panel or door blockages would wet along the sills and footwell and the aerial depends on where yours is located (roof or wing).
