I can remember from my mk5 days (which isn't that long ago, but long enough for me to forget almost anything useful I learnt) that there were a lot of lookalikes from the Far East that did the video playback thing. They are usually quite easy to identify as 'fakes' and some are much better than others, going from reports on forums (there have been some big threads on these on the Yank forums as they like to modify first and then complain about everything in typical Yank fashion). Waywell is one brand that stick in my mind as being popular and cheap.
Many of the Eastern European ones are direct from the factories and are probably 'borrowed' from the production lines. These are generally genuine VAG products that obviously won't have much in the way of factory back up. I'm led to believe that many of the ones sold on car forums started life via these sellers. They work fine though, and you pay far, far less than you would from a VW dealer so you just have to accept any consequences if the thing malfunctions.
Others are re-furbed factory returns.
God knows what the chequered history of my unit is, I still love it and cherish it though
