PM Darren (mortygt140) he may have one or at least know where to get one from.  He came across to Whitby from Leeds one Sunday morning to fit mine along with reversing camera and LED tail lights.  Took a couple of hours in total and he did an excellent tidy job.
Deep Black Pearl Mk7 GT TDI 150.

I'm not aware of fake versions but it could explain Askers sound quality concerns

I can remember from my mk5 days (which isn't that long ago, but long enough for me to forget almost anything useful I learnt) that there were a lot of lookalikes from the Far East that did the video playback thing. They are usually quite easy to identify as 'fakes' and some are much better than others, going from reports on forums (there have been some big threads on these on the Yank forums as they like to modify first and then complain about everything in typical Yank fashion). Waywell is one brand that stick in my mind as being popular and cheap.

Many of the Eastern European ones are direct from the factories and are probably 'borrowed' from the production lines. These are generally genuine VAG products that obviously won't have much in the way of factory back up. I'm led to believe that many of the ones sold on car forums started life via these sellers. They work fine though, and you pay far, far less than you would from a VW dealer so you just have to accept any consequences if the thing malfunctions.
Others are re-furbed factory returns.

God knows what the chequered history of my unit is, I still love it and cherish it though

Heres one of the fake ones on ebay.

Quite obvious if you compare it to a real one, but I bet it catches some people out

I see, more of a close copy than a total "fake"

N13KKF sells them: RNS510 VER C LED £550 - RNS510 VER B £460

I've just made an offer on one for £430 and he claims its genuine VW and has 100% feedback for lots of sat navs for VW, Audi, Merc & BMW. Yes the other are copies manufactured by "TTI" Cheers guys. Hopefully fitting it in 2 weeks. Some claim its plug n play but reading on one thread it requires reprogramming with VAGCOM? Any ideas?

You need to enable BAP via VCDS to get the steering wheel buttons to work and the directions to come up in the dash display.
The unit itself will work okay without VCDS, so long as you have the radio code.
