First time head gasket change - noob help needed
« on: 06 February 2011, 14:43 »
Hi All,

First off my mechanical skills are not the best however I like to try and learn.

I have had just got my Golf running right after replacing the throttle body, when she started misfiring. I took her to my local garage and upon thire advise I replaced the HT Leads, Sparks, Dizzy and rota arm. This helped but didn't solve the misfire so she went back for them to have a look, they came back and said the compression is down on cylinders 1 & 2. Head gasket is the first thing to blame.

So I got her in to a friends garage and this moring started work on taking the head off. After a hour or so hit a couple of walls.

1. Upon removing the camshaft cover bolts one of the snaped leaving a bit in one of the camshaft bearing caps (the far most left one when looking at the engine).
2. After getting the camshaft cover off I could see the head bolts, however I don't have anything in my toolkit that fits.

My questions to you are:

1. Can I just replace the camshaft bearing cap with a new/used one?
2. What tool do I need to remove the head bolts with?
3. Once the head bolts are off can I remove the head without having to remove the exhaust manifold from the rest of the exhaust? (I have got the bolts holding the exhaust to the head off however a couple of the studs are still in the head.)
4. Has anyone seen any good guides to replacing head gaskets. I have done a lot of searching however don't hurt to ask.

Unfortunately it looks like I might have to hire a car for next weekends famliy trip as I'm not confident in getting this done in time. :(

Thanks in advance for any help or advise.

Matt.

You will need to replace the head, camshaft bearing caps are matched and cannot be swapped around.

Are they matched in all engine models?

The Haynes book says that they are drilled off centre in models "AAM, ABS, 2E, ADZ, ADY, AAZ, 1Y, 1Z and AEK" which makes me believe all other models are centre drilled and might be replacable. I believe I have an AEE.

The car is a P (96) 1.6 Golf CL.

Thanks.

Matt.

No they are line bored from new so fitting another one will not work, this applies to all engines
