Leaking Coolant
« on: 05 February 2011, 14:34 »
Hi Chaps,

I've had a slow water leak on my car for a little while, only needed a some water after 400 miles of driving.
I think I've found the source of the leak, which only seems to happen when hot.
It's this flange/pipe connector on the side of the block (AGG).
Around the connection looks like it's been in contat with hot water, which is why I think it's the culprit.

Only problem is, I have no idea what it is or what it is called!
Here's a picture, its on the righthand side of the block.

Any ideas?

Hi..if you'd done a few little searches you will have found plenty of info exactly about your problem!
But yes, it's a plastic coolant flange and a common thing that fails after many years, it's probably just the Oring that's gone but best to replace the whole flange with new Oring and make sure you get the blanking plug too and the items aren't too expensive.. there will be an outlet on the new flange that's not needed hence the plug..All available from your local VW dealer, and the G12 ++ coolant.

Ps, don't overtighten the flange fixing bolts.

That'll get you sorted i'm sure.

A second look at your picture, it might be the smaller single outlet flange on the end of the block.. that feeds the heating system i believe..but anyway same applies, you need a new flange and sealing ring.

it's a little difficult to search for something when you don't know what it is...

if i ring vw, will they know the part i need if i refer to it as a plastic coolant flange, or does it have a specific name.

All you have to do is click on the 'search' button and follow.. even if you don't know what something is just type what you think it is and you might be surprised!   Infact you already said 'flange' in your first post.. even just that single word would bring up results ;)

But anyways yes VW will know what it is if you say 'plastic coolant flange on the right hand 'end' of the block AGG engine'

Infact also, have a look at the front main coolant flange on the 'front' of the block..any signs of coolant around there... it could be worth doing both of them while your at it.
Not difficult jobs and a good thing to get done.
