Newbie........ With problem.
« on: 25 February 2005, 22:50 »
Hello everyone.
New to the forum but would be really grateful for any ideas you guys may have.
? Having looked through the archives I can't see any related problems, so just wondering if anyone can help or has had a similar issue.

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? I have recently bought a Mk3 Cabriolet  which I was very happy with.? I had been told the vag alarm system in the car had been playing up by the previous owner and sure enough it kept going off for no reason at all. As it was ten years old and probably not worth having repaired? I decided to get a new one fitted for cheaper insurance and peace of mind. I Opted for a Toad cat 1 as I had one of these in my G40 and had been happy with it. When fitting the Toad the installer removed the vag unit completely, the alarm was tested and all seemed great..... However the car would not start. Having fitted Alarms for 17 years the installer was quite baffled-
? Fuel pump was whirring
? Starter was cranking
? Had fuel to the rail.
? Had spark at plugs
 Injectors where pulsing
? ?But still car wouldn't fire up.
? After a while he decided to call a local auto-electrician who tested all fuses, relays, wiring. Eventually he concluded that the problem was to do with the ecu (came up on the diagnostic as injector 1 short), and sure enough there were two tracks on it near the injector driver that were scorched but not broken.
? ? It was decided that a secondhand ecu would be bought as this would be cheaper than a repair, but at the time it wasn't known that this would be coded. I took the ecu to an ecu specialist and he changed the coded chip from my ecu to the replacement one. Thought this would sort the problem as the ecu sourced was guaranteed working.
? The car still won't start..... Anyone got any ideas?
 Jay.
